About Baileywick Properties

Our journey as housing providers began in 1978 as newlyweds. We both recently came from working in Washington DC. Mike is an Oregon native. Susan moved here for work and met and married here. We loved the historic buildings and ongoing renovations in DC and looked for the same in our first home. We knew we could only afford a fixer and that inner city homes would
be cheaper because they would be older and need work. We found one in the historic
Eliot neighborhood. Coincidently, two other houses were available at the end of the block
that were challenging for the owners to sell.
Our youthful energy fixing our first homes was noticed by our elderly neighbors and others concerned about the loss of historic buildings to speculative developers. They recommended other buildings to purchase, resulting in us continuing to acquire and rehabilitate more buildings in the neighborhood. Our “Bailiwick” became stabilizing our neighborhood by restoring its historic buildings, some of which we are among the few National Historic Registry properties in Portland’s Eliot neighborhood. We are still in our original house and our buildings are all within walking distance.
Our residential leases are all being managed by another local, family firm; Reliance Property Management. Our proximity to our properties allows us to provide ongoing oversite, hands-on maintenance and tenant support. We manage the few commercial buildings we own. The Eliot Neighborhood site is a good source of information about our neighborhood at EliotNeighborhood.org
